Structural damage to buildings and other civil infrastructure by expansive pyritic shale is becoming increasingly prevalent as construction continues to expand into undeveloped areas as engineering knowledge of the damaging effects of building on or with this material remains inadequate.  Establishing a database of case studies regarding expansive shales will aid in refining the theoretical predictions models and providing guidance for standardized laboratory expansion and prediction procedures.
